About AE Capital
Where it Started
AE Capital was founded in 2011 in Melbourne, Australia, by Dr Lyle Pakula — an academic with a long career in weather forecasting, modelling and research.
Dr Pakula had always approached weather forecasting by first considering the fundamentals of the day, not simply relying on what the models were predicting.
But the real insight came in seeing the connection between the top-down fundamental drivers that discretionary traders relied on and the intersection of those ideas with a robust modern framework for systematic trading.
When transitioning into finance, he noticed an opportunity to introduce more modern techniques from the fields of atmospheric and computer science into finance, creating intraday trading models that utilised machine learning at a time when these terms were not commonplace in the industry. That combination — a scientist’s instinct for fundamentals, paired with more than a decade of applying it systematically — is still how we build every model today.
What Hasn't Changed
AE Capital’s investment philosophy has always remained constant since day one.
We start by understanding what fundamentally drives economies and markets — then find the intersection between that understanding and data science, combining the best of human analysis and machine intelligence.
It’s a philosophy with a long track record, and it remains the foundation of everything we do. We’re just as consistent in how we think about the money we manage. We treat every dollar as if it were a family member’s life savings. That mindset means we take risk seriously, as a discipline that shapes every decision we make.

Over the years, we’ve continued to trade new markets and adopt new techniques, and we’ve rebuilt our trading platform multiple times over. Today we operate with near-complete automation across front, middle and back office functions — one of the first managers to adopt this level of automation across the full investment process. It reduces risk at every stage, because protecting our investors’ capital matters just as much as growing it.
